Bumpy Johnson's wife was spat on in front of thirty witnesses in a Harlem reading room in October 1937 — and Bumpy promised that within 24 hours, all thirteen mobsters would be gone. This is a dramatized Bumpy Johnson story set in 1930s Harlem. When Vincent Varrone, a downtown collector for the crime boss Dominic Bellini, humiliates Elena Johnson at her little reading room, everyone expects Bumpy Johnson to answer with violence. But Elena has been collecting rent notices marked with a strange blue half-moon, and a frightened bookkeeper warns her that the insult is only the first move in a much bigger plan. Bumpy Johnson has one day to keep his promise — and the way thirteen men "vanish" is not what Harlem expects. A slow, tension-filled Harlem gangster story about Bumpy Johnson, his wife, the Italian mob and a 24-hour deadline. At the end, "Story or Legend?" looks at the rumors Harlem told about the thirteen men. DISCLAIMER: This is an alternate-history work of FICTION inspired by 1930s Harlem. Elena Johnson, Vincent Varrone, Dominic Bellini and the events in this video are invented or dramatized and are not historical. Bumpy Johnson's real wife was Mayme Hatcher Johnson.
