He Wanted a Bride Who Would Cook for Nothing—Then She Knocked at the Next Door: “I Pay My Own Keep”
Wyoming Territory, 1885. Hazel Lowry came west to Rawlins on a thirty-one dollar ticket sent by a ranch foreman who promised marriage. On the platform she learned what he had written to his boss: a wife would cook for the crew for nothing, and he would keep the thirty dollars a month set aside for a cook. Hazel turned him down on the spot. She took her flour sack and her sourdough crock and walked through the snow to the next claim, where a stranger named Cole Barrow opened his door. She did not ask for charity or a husband. She offered him rent and fresh bread every morning, on her own terms, until the spring thaw came. The foreman sold her trunk before sundown, with her mother's bake kettle and her sister's letters still inside.
