In 1910, an unidentified child was found dead near the railroad tracks in North Springfield, Pennsylvania. With no family coming forward to claim the child, what happened next became a forgotten chapter of Erie-area history. In the middle of February’s deep freeze, the undertaker faced a difficult decision: with the ground frozen solid and no one claiming the remains, the child could potentially be turned over to the state for dissection. Instead, a woman named O’Brien offered temporary vault space until spring, when the ground would finally thaw. But there was another plan. The Schlaudecker family, who were connected to Trinity Cemetery, donated a burial plot in case the child’s parents were never found. Decades later, the search for that plot raised a haunting question: Was this unidentified child actually buried in Trinity Cemetery—and if so, where? The family plot was eventually located, but the cemetery marker had deteriorated. Weathering and missing plaques left the inscription nearly impossible to read, creating another mystery. The evidence points toward the child being buried in Trinity Cemetery and never returning home. According to the historical account, the funeral was held at St. Patrick’s Church, with a small casket carried by young pallbearers. For a child whose identity was unknown and whose family never appeared, an entire community quietly came together to provide what they could: a funeral, a burial, and a final resting place. This is the story of The Forgotten Boy—a 1910 Erie-area historical mystery that raises questions about a child who disappeared from history, but may still have a grave waiting to be found.
