Modern recording gives us the ability to fix almost everything — timing, tuning, drum sounds, dynamics, even entire performances. But at what point does “better” start making the music worse? In this video, I look at whether modern rock drums have become too perfect — from click tracks and quantizing to sample replacement and editing. I also talk about Alex Van Halen, Phil Collins’ famous In the Air Tonight fill, and why precision isn’t necessarily the same thing as grid alignment. I’m not against modern recording tools. I use clicks, samples and editing myself. The question is whether we sometimes mistake technical improvement for artistic improvement — and edit away some of the feel that made the performance interesting in the first place. What do you think?
