In 2005, a thirty-year-old architect from Beijing designed a silver museum at the edge of the Gobi Desert, inspired by a movie scene he couldn't place: a silver spaceship in the desert. Years later, George Lucas saw that building and said, "I want to find this guy." Only much later did the architect learn the movie was an early Star Wars film.
This is the story of Ma Yansong: the kid who ran across the rooftops of old Beijing, failed his film-school exam at nineteen, studied under Zaha Hadid at Yale, started a firm called MAD with no clients and a house for goldfish, and became famous overnight at thirty with Canada's "Marilyn Monroe" towers. Then the story of the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, the billion-dollar museum that San Francisco turned down, Chicago sued away, and Los Angeles finally welcomed on September 22, 2026. In the second half, I take you inside with my own photos and video, plus practical tips for your visit.
