Shadow Talk - People Watching People (1984)

Released in 1984, “People Watching People” was the debut single from Northern Irish synth-pop band Shadow Talk, formed around Barry Tipping and Colin “Macker” McMullan following their time with Portadown power-pop band The Singles. The track combines layered keyboards, guitar and driving rhythms with a polished, melodic sound characteristic of mid-’80s new wave. Released on Magnet Records and produced by Nigel Gray, noted for his work with The Police and Siouxsie and the Banshees, “People Watching People” earned Shadow Talk some mainland UK attention and became a minor hit. With its blend of synth-pop, new wave and atmospheric pop, it remains a little-known gem from Northern Ireland’s vibrant ’80s music scene.
