Charlie Daniels turned this song down, so The Marshall Tucker Band recorded it themselves in 1975 Written by guitarist George McCorkle, "Fire on the Mountain" became The Marshall Tucker Band's first Top 40 hit when it was released in 1975 as the lead single from their album Searchin' for a Rainbow, peaking at No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. McCorkle originally wrote the song hoping Charlie Daniels would record it for an album of the same name. When Daniels passed on it, The Marshall Tucker Band recorded it themselves instead — and brought Daniels in to guest on fiddle anyway, alongside Toy Caldwell's intentionally out-of-tune steel guitar. The song tells the story of a South Carolina family chasing fortune in the California gold rush, ending in tragedy when the prospector dies and leaves his widow with a worthless mining claim — a darker narrative than most of the band's radio staples. Nearly fifty years later, "Fire on the Mountain" remains one of the most enduring Southern rock songs of the era, and the breakthrough single that helped establish The Marshall Tucker Band as a fixture on rock radio beyond "Can't You See." Recorded and mixed at Capricorn Sound Studios in May and June 1975, remastered in 2005 by Mike Thomas. Recorded in Ann Arbor, MI in April of 1980. About The Marshall Tucker Band: The Marshall Tucker Band is an American rock band from Spartanburg, South Carolina. Noted for incorporating blues, country and jazz into an eclectic sound, The Marshall Tucker Band helped establish the Southern rock genre in the early 1970s. The "Marshall Tucker" in the band's name does not refer to a band member, but rather to a blind piano tuner from Spartanburg. While the band was discussing possible band names one evening in an old warehouse they had rented for rehearsal space, someone noticed that the warehouse's door key had the name "Marshall Tucker" inscribed on it, and suggested they call themselves "The Marshall Tucker Band," not realizing it referred to an actual person. Lead vocalist Doug Gray remains the only original member still active with the band. Key songs include "Can't You See" and "Heard It In a Love Song." Searchin' for a Rainbow, released in 1975, is the band's third studio album and includes "Fire on the Mountain," written by guitarist George McCorkle and featuring a guest fiddle performance from Charlie Daniels.
