Something WEIRD is Happening in Chinese Track!

On November 17th, 2025, China witnessed a moment that will be remembered for decades. Sixteen-year-old sprinter Chen Yujie stepped onto the track in Guangzhou as an underdog and walked off as a national phenomenon. With a jaw-dropping 11.10 seconds in the 100-meter final, she didn’t just win gold she broke a 28-year-old Asian U20 record, shattered the Chinese U20 record, and produced the fourth-fastest U18 time in world history. A new generation of Chinese athletes is bulldozing expectations across multiple sports. From Li Zeyang’s 10.11 in the men’s 100m to Gong Debin’s national record in the 400m hurdles… from 13-year-old Yu Zidi winning triple gold in the pool to Olympic champion Shi Zhiyong closing his career with a third National Games title this is an era shift in Chinese athletics.
