• Gene McLaughlin didn't set out to become one of Northeastern Pennsylvania's most respected custom home builders. He started out framing houses as a teenager, spent years running large residential developments in the Philadelphia area, then built luxury homes in Los Angeles before coming home to start G.F. McLaughlin LLC with his brother, Christian. In this episode, Gene talks about what design-build really means, why cash flow and subcontractor relationships matter as much as talent, and what it took to bet on himself when the market fell apart in 2008. It's a grounded conversation about craftsmanship, confidence, and choosing to build close to home.
In this episode, we explore:
• What design-build really means, and how handling design and construction under one roof helps control cost, quality, and communication
• Gene's path from framing houses in Northeastern PA to running large developments for Pulte Homes and The McKee Group, then building custom homes in Los Angeles
• Why he decided to start his own company in 2008, and what he's learned since about cash flow, subcontractor relationships, and staying steady when a job doesn't go as planned
• What brought him back to Northeastern Pennsylvania, and why he says, "Wherever you go, there you are"
