Episode 38 Jack Hays Surveyor, Texas Ranger, and California’s First Surveyor General

Jack Coffey Hays—often remembered as one of the greatest Texas Rangers—was first and last a land surveyor. In this episode of 10 Minute Land Surveyor, Dave Woolley examines the overlooked reality of Hays’ career: how frontier surveying placed men directly in the path of war, why Comanches targeted surveyors to stop settlement, and how Hays’ technical discipline shaped his leadership as a Ranger, lawman, and eventually California’s first U.S. Surveyor General. From Texas headrights and the Battle of the Alamo, to the adoption of the Colt revolver, to the orderly layout of Oakland and the East Bay, this is the story of surveying as state-building under fire.
