In 1900 the man who ran the Waldorf-Astoria began building a castle on an island shaped like a heart. Six stories, a hundred and twenty rooms, a power house standing out in the river with a stone arch bridge running to it, three hundred men on the payroll. It was a present for his wife. On the seventh of January 1904 a telegram went from New York to Heart Island: stop all construction. Louise Boldt was dead at forty-two. The men put down their tools that day, and nobody came back. The house stood open to the weather for seventy-three years, and George Boldt never set foot on the island again. This is the full story of Boldt Castle and the river it was built on — George C.
