Patti Rother, founder of Root and Rise, joins Walking with Walfinch at IFA 2026 with 20-plus years of franchise development expertise. She breaks down how to build a franchise buyer persona, why salespeople fail at follow-up, and what predictable franchise sales really looks like. Key highlights from this episode: Most brands plateau because they never revisited their buyer persona — the person buying your franchise today may not be who was buying it three years ago Customer journeys are choose-your-own-adventure, not a straight line — three unopened emails means stop emailing and call instead Discovery day should always be in person; how a candidate treats the waiter at dinner tells you more than any Zoom call Root and Rise's model: 90-day franchise foundations (persona, CRM, messaging) → sales accelerator → offboarding with a trained replacement; one brand sold 67 franchises in a year Questions answered in this episode: How do I build a franchise buyer persona that actually works? Why do franchise sales pipelines stall or become unpredictable? How should a franchise automate follow-up without losing the human touch? What makes discovery day effective — and should it be virtual or in person? How do I set a realistic franchise sales goal? What does a franchise development agency like Root and Rise actually do? Patti Rother has spent over 20 years in franchising, more than 12 specifically in franchise sales. Her framework starts before any sales process: the buyer persona. Most brands don't know who their ideal franchisee truly is — and many plateau not because their brand changed, but because their persona did and they never noticed. Patti majored in psychology and uses it daily: demographics matter far less than psychology — where candidates spend their time, what their "why" is (income replacement, legacy, multi-unit wealth), whether a single unit can actually deliver what they want, and where they consume content. She builds personas by calling existing franchisees before agreeing to work with a brand, auditing competitors, and checking whether training and onboarding actually suit the person being sold to. The system underneath the salesperson is where most brands fail. Great salespeople excel at face-to-face conversation and storytelling; they struggle with admin and follow-up. CRM workflows and cadences — not AI, just basic automation — build an infrastructure so the salesperson can focus on selling. Journeys branch based on behaviour: opened-but-unclicked is different from clicked, which is different from three consecutive unopened emails. Discovery day is the culmination — always in person, always with a meal, and always watching how candidates treat the people around them. Set your sales goal based on your actual marketing budget, know your conversion rate at every funnel stage, and build a system that doesn't depend on any one person's heroics.
