Orthodox Doctrine Alone Will Not Heal You, Fr. Romanides

The Epistle of James states that the demons believe in one God and tremble, which means that accurate belief about God is not by itself a saving condition. Christ says in Matthew 7:21 that not everyone who calls Him Lord will enter the kingdom, but the one who does the will of the Father. St. Gregory the Theologian warns in his First Theological Oration that theology properly belongs to those who are being purified. St. Isaac the Syrian warns in the Ascetical Homilies that knowledge running ahead of ascetic labor produces presumption, because it gives the sensation of progress while the actual condition of the soul remains untouched. At the same time, this video does not argue that doctrine is unimportant. It argues the opposite. Romanides is equally clear that without Orthodox dogma, without sensitivity to right doctrine, without Orthodox practice in daily life, and without participation in the liturgical life of the Church, no one reaches purification and illumination. Doctrine and the liturgical life are the necessary foundation and the basic prerequisites that make guidance toward healing possible. A false diagnosis held sincerely still kills the patient. The correctness of the prescription is precisely why it matters, and the prescription is still not the medicine. The practical section explains what taking the medicine actually looks like. Purification, in the sense St. Maximus the Confessor describes throughout the Chapters on Love, is the healing of the passions and the reordering of desire, fear, and attention. It proceeds through repentance, confession, fasting, almsgiving, patience under insult, obedience, and persistent prayer. St. Diadochos of Photiki distinguishes knowledge, which can be transmitted in words, from wisdom, which comes through the experience of the Holy Spirit and unites the soul to God. St. Gregory Palamas defends in the Triads the reality of participation in the uncreated energies of God, which is the difference between describing God accurately and knowing Him. The video closes with a specific practice drawn from the counsel of Abba Dorotheos of Gaza on brief and regular self examination, structured so that it can be sustained for one month by an ordinary person with an ordinary schedule.
