Plus, Phil Collins, the biggest hitmaker of the 80s, was hired to write a song for a movie, but then the producers rejected it... so he kept it for himself, and he had sweet revenge when it was a bigger hit than the movie. Plus, Free Fallin', a song by the iconic singer Tom Petty making up funny lyrics to make his legendary producer laugh. The lyrics got dumber and dumber, but his joke song became his biggest hit and an all-time classic. And then there’s the only album in music history with 7 top 5 hits. It’s Skid Row with I Remember You. By 1989, Skid Row had arrived. Anchored by Sebastian Bach's jaw-dropping multi-octave vocals, Dave "The Snake" Sabo's blazing guitar work, and Rachel Bolan's driving bass… the Jersey hard rockers’ self-titled debut was tearing up radio. "Youth Gone Wild" and "18 and Life" delivered heavy riffs and dark, cinematic storytelling. Everything was pointing upward. But their ballad I Remember You almost didn't make the album. "I Remember You" was written by Bolan and Sabo in the green room of Bolan's parents' house in Toms River, New Jersey — a nostalgic love song built on memories of summer romance. When the band started playing it at small New Jersey clubs and dive bars before signing their major label deal, the reaction from female fans was overwhelming. Which, for Sabo and Bolan was a problem. I Remember You was a one-way ticket to being dismissed as a soft “chick band.” They pushed back hard against including it on the debut album. It took Sebastian Bach and Atlantic Records execs essentially overruling them to get the song onto the tracklist. Bach, for his part, never wavered. He said, “I always knew 'I Remember You' was a massive hit from the first time we played it. Rachel and Snake were worried about looking soft, but I told them, 'You guys are crazy — this song is going to make us stars.’” And he was right. Released in 1990, I Remember You climbed to #6 on the Hot 100 and became the defining power ballad of that year… the sort of song that got played at every high school prom from coast to coast. Every night on tour, Sebastian Bach watched as thousands of fans sang it back to him, word for word. The song Bolan and Sabo were afraid would ruin them turned out to be the one nobody ever forgot. It also includes one of the most badass notes ever hit in a song and it was one Sebastian Bach had to prepare for… He wanted to hit a note nobody could ever touch and he did. But here’s the thing…Bach can still hit that note! he hit it when he was 20 and he can still nail it at 58! At #9, it’s the B-52's with Roam The B-52's were never supposed to be a mainstream band. They were always something weirder and more wonderful than that… a gloriously eccentric Athens, Georgia outfit built on surf guitar riffs, campy kitsch, retro fashion, and the irreplaceable vocals of Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Cindy Wilson.
