Hello 😊
Here’s my transcription of The Jackson 5 song “I Want You Back.” This song comes from their 1969 album Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5, and the bass player was Wilton Felder.
You can find this on Muzento under the Advanced Songs category.
Something got changed in my camera settings and the recording resolution or focus is a little different than it normally is. I'm not sure how it's going to look on YouTube, so my advanced apologies if it looks a little off from what I normally do. Hopefully I'll figure it out and we'll be back to normal next week. :)
My first thought when I got this request was...I wonder how many other versions there are already on YouTube? Probably hundreds. I still haven't looked...haha. I'm kind of afraid to!
But after some encouraging words and looking at it again, I thought, sure, why not? I'll throw my version into the ring. Plus, it's a fantastic bass line that I'm more than happy to learn and transcribe. Thanks, Russ!
I ended up doing a few takes on this one because I was hearing some little things in my playing that I wasn't happy with. Some of the rhythms I was playing were a little lazy, and it wasn't until I really focused on them and stopped taking for granted that I knew the rhythm that I became more satisfied with what I was hearing.
This might sound like a simple pop song, but the bass and the rhythm that's going on are far from simple. These guys were killing it in the studio!
Wilton Felder was great! What a musician's musician. He played sax, bass, composed, was a band leader, and was an innovator. An underrated legend in my opinion.
Read this one down and really pay attention to the articulations and being accurate with the rhythms. Try to listen to the other instruments too. It's not just the drums and percussion that give you a good sense of the time and rhythm. The guitars and piano are a big part of it too. ;)
I enjoyed working on this one...I think you will too. ;)
Don't forget to like and subscribe, and thanks for watching, and for keeping great bass lines alive.
