Almost everything we encounter becomes larger by taking up more room, so it feels natural to imagine the Universe growing into some greater emptiness beyond its edge. But modern cosmology describes something much stranger. In this slow journey through expanding space, we explore how general relativity allows the geometry of spacetime itself to change, why galaxies can become more widely separated without flying through a fixed cosmic background, and how the cosmological scale factor gives physicists a way to describe expansion without requiring any external space at all. Along the way, we’ll look at why the balloon analogy is useful but easily misunderstood, how a Universe could be finite without possessing an edge, why an infinite Universe can still expand, and why the Big Bang was not an explosion from one point into pre-existing emptiness. We’ll follow the evidence from galaxy redshifts and the cosmic microwave background to the discovery of accelerated expansion and dark energy, while also asking why your house, your body, the Solar System and the Milky Way are not simply stretching along with the cosmos. Settle in as we explore one of cosmology’s most counterintuitive ideas: space does not necessarily need somewhere else to go, because expansion describes changing distances within the Universe itself.
