You'll find a rich trove in this video of history, context, advocacy and inside information about Port Chicago and the trial of the 50, presented by a spectrum of experts, stakeholders, and creators of a monument unveiled on the 80th anniversary of the guilty verdict, an early turning point in the civil rights movement. To navigate through all this, a clickable table of contents is down below.
Background: The most deadly stateside disaster of World War II, at Port Chicago near Concord, led to the court-martial and mutiny conviction of 50 Black sailors, and eventually the desegregation of the Navy and all the armed services.
The Monument: The only freely accessible monument to Port Chicago was unveiled near the site of the trial, on Yerba Buena Island, San Francisco, on October 24, 2024, the 80th anniversary of the mutiny conviction of the Port Chicago 50.
This video of the unveiling ceremony presents the Port Chicago narrative, the mutiny verdict as a turning point at the dawn of the civil rights movement, and the racism and injustice of the trial which led to the eventual exoneration of all the Black sailors in 2024.
