Tilicho Lake is one of the most spectacular high-altitude lakes in the world.
Where it is:
Located in Manang District, Gandaki Province, Nepal - in Nesyang Rural Municipality of the Annapurna range. It sits on the famous Annapurna Circuit trek, about a 2-3 day side trip from the main circuit. The base village for trekkers is Manang, which has phone, internet, money exchange and a high-altitude hospital.
Altitude & Records:
At 4,919 meters (16,138 ft) above sea level, it was considered the world's highest lake for its size until 2019, when Kajin Sara Lake was discovered. It is still listed as the largest high-altitude glacial lake by volume and the highest lake in Nepal.
Physical Features:
It is a glacial lake fed by meltwater from Tilicho Peak and the Great Barrier range that forms its western shore.
• Length: ∼4 km long
• Width: ∼1.2 km wide
• Average depth: 85 meters
• Water: Glacial, turquoise-blue, freezing cold year-round
Surrounded by bare, stark Himalayan slopes and snow-covered peaks including Tilicho Peak (7,134m), Annapurna and Nilgiri, the lake has no fish or aquatic life due to extreme altitude.
Significance:
• Trekking: One of the most popular and challenging side-treks of the Annapurna Circuit. It takes about a week from Kathmandu with transportation now available up to Khangsar, Manang.
• Religious: For Hindus, it is believed to be the ancient Kak Bhusundi Lake mentioned in the Ramayana, where sage Kak Bhusundi told Garuda the story of Ramayana. Many pilgrims visit during Janai Purnima.
• Landscape: Completely barren, high-altitude desert landscape - rocky moraine, snow, and intense blue water. The view is often described as "a jewel of the Annapurna Range".
Best season to visit is March-May and September-November when the trail to Tilicho Base Camp (4,150m) is open and the lake is not completely frozen.
