President Abraham Lincoln signed the statehood proclamation on June 20, 1863, after western counties split from Virginia during the Civil War. West Virginia has has the highest average elevation (about 1,500 feet) of any state east of the Mississippi River, peaking at Spruce Knob (4,861 feet). The New River flows south-to-north and is considered one of the oldest rivers on Earth.
