In English, a Pokémon "faints." In Japanese, the word is different — and once you see it, Lavender Town and the Marowak you were never allowed to catch stop reading like a kids' game.
The original word is hinshi, a medical term for the brink of death. This traces it through the whole franchise: the graveyard tower where you bury Pokémon, the ghost Marowak no ball can catch, the Pokédex entries that describe Pokémon dying, the attack names built on death, and Mr. Fuji and his flute — leading to the tower they quietly demolished.
The localization softened one word. Everything underneath it stayed.
All from the games' own text. No fan theories.
