A day in the life of a PhD student in Busan, South Korea — starting with the walk to the subway and ending back home twelve-ish hours later. I'm doing my doctorate at Korea Maritime and Ocean University, which sits out on Yeongdo, an island connected to the rest of Busan by bridge, so even the commute has a view. Most of the day is normal grad school stuff: working through data at my desk, running samples in the chemistry lab, then switching over to the microbiology lab for a different set of experiments entirely. Lunch was a convenience store run between labs — the kind of meal that's become a full Korean institution on its own — eaten on campus before heading to the library to actually sit down and study for a few hours.
