Paulina and Alejandro had spent years designing modern buildings.
Clean lines. Honest materials. Open plans. Carefully considered proportions.
Then they received a commission that required them to look backward.
A hotelier wanted to restore an extraordinary Art Deco property, preserving its original character while transforming it into a modern luxury hotel.
The building was filled with details that contemporary architects had spent years learning to remove.
Stepped ceilings. Geometric metalwork. Polished stone. Decorative screens. Brass fittings. Mirrors. Elaborate lighting.
Alejandro approached the project cautiously.
Paulina was fascinated.
She began studying the relationship between the building's decorative patterns and its underlying structure. What initially appeared ornamental often followed an exact architectural rhythm.
The stepped ceilings echoed the geometry of the façade. The brass screens repeated the proportions of the windows. The marble floors established visual axes that guided guests through the public rooms.
There was more discipline beneath the glamour than either architect had expected.
They preserved the original decorative elements, simplified later additions, and introduced modern lighting, services and circulation without sacrificing the building's sense of occasion.
When the grand lobby reopened, the result was neither a museum nor a modern building pretending to be old.
It was something more interesting.
A beautiful building from another era, completely at ease in 1965.
*The music follows the same philosophy.*
Sophisticated European library jazz combines the polished precision of a mid-1960s studio orchestra with the elegant theatricality of Art Deco.
Warm acoustic piano, lyrical muted brass, expressive clarinet, melodic upright bass and crisp brushed drums establish a refined jazz foundation. Vibraphone, graceful woodwinds, pizzicato strings and carefully arranged chamber-orchestral passages introduce touches of vintage glamour.
Memorable melodies unfold through symmetrical phrases, elegant rhythmic patterns and beautifully controlled instrumental contrasts.
Occasional orchestral flourishes suggest the grandeur of an earlier age, while the harmonies, arrangements and recording remain unmistakably modern.
The music is glamorous without excess, nostalgic without imitation, and sophisticated without becoming formal.
Like the architecture, it discovers that decoration and discipline can coexist beautifully.
Perfect for reading, writing, studying, architecture, design, creative work, elegant dinners, afternoon coffee or simply enjoying an uninterrupted hour of sophisticated European jazz.
