Radha, smiling, prepares to make parathas. Radha, 30 (smiling, to herself): Today, I’ll prepare such a breakfast for my in-laws that they’ll be licking their fingers in delight! Let me add some crushed kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves) to the vegetable dish—it will double both the flavor and the fragrance! Narration: Radha takes some kasuri methi from a container, crushes it between her palms, and sprinkles it over the vegetable dish. Just then, Sunita’s sharp voice rings out. Sunita, 56 (shouting): Hey, daughter-in-law! How much longer will it take to get the food ready? My dear boy is suffering from hunger! Radha, 30 (flustered): Just two more minutes, *Maanji*! The parathas and the vegetable dish are just about ready... I’m taking the piping hot parathas off the griddle and bringing them to the dining table now... Narration: Radha quickly finishes preparing breakfast and brings it to the dining table. As soon as the food is placed before them, the entire family’s expressions shift—as if someone had just served them bitter gourd juice. As they begin to eat, Suresh speaks up... Suresh, 62 (grimacing): "Hey, daughter-in-law! Did you make a paratha, or a piece of leather? It takes so much effort just to chew this! If I pull on it any harder, all thirty-two of my teeth might just pop right out!" Sunita, 56 (pointing toward the vegetable dish): "And what is this? Why have you scattered all this 'grass'—these herbs—over the dish?" Radha, 30 (in a hushed, timid voice): "Ma-ji, that’s kasturi methi (dried fenugreek leaves)... it enhances the flavor. I thought it would make the dish taste better..." Sunita, 56 (angrily): "Didn't I tell you to just make a simple paratha and a vegetable dish? Can’t you ever do exactly what you’re told?" Radha, 30 (to herself): "Oh, God... I’ve been slaving away in the kitchen since five in the morning to get their breakfast ready, and yet they’re the ones scolding me! My efforts mean absolutely nothing in this house..." Sumit, 23 (stirring his bowl of Maggi noodles): "Hey, bhabhi (sister-in-law)! Forget the parathas and the vegetables—look what you’ve done to my Maggi!" Radha, 30 (distressed): "But, Sumit, you were the one who asked me to make 'soupy' Maggi..." Sumit, 23 (making a face): "I asked for 'soupy' Maggi, sure—but you’ve gone and drowned the whole thing in a swimming pool!" "Who puts this much water in Maggi? I can’t even eat this! I’m off to college—you eat this watery Maggi yourself!" Narration: Sumit gets up from the dining table in a huff and storms out. Sunita (watching Sumit leave): "Because of you, my poor, sweet boy has gone to college on an empty stomach! You’ve ruined the mood for the whole house first thing in the morning!" Narration: Hearing everyone’s remarks, Radha becomes deeply upset; she walks to her bedroom with heavy steps. Meanwhile, at college, Sumit is marching toward his class, looking angry and sulky. Suddenly, Payal comes running from behind and grabs his hand. Sumit (startled, trying to pull his hand away): "Payal! What are you doing? People will see us!" Payal (unfazed): "Let them see! Everyone knows we love each other anyway. Besides, why are you so late today?" Sumit (grimacing, sounding irritable): "Don't even ask! My sister-in-law made such a terrible batch of Maggi at home—it was practically all water!" Payal (laughing lightly): "If there was too much water, you could have just asked her to heat it on the stove for a couple of minutes to let the water evaporate. Was there really any need to make such a big deal out of it?" "Come on, sit down quietly now and have some food from my tiffin." Narration: Payal feeds Sumit. In the evening, Sunita is sitting on the sofa, chanting on a rudraksha mala (prayer beads), when Sumit enters, looking completely exhausted. Sunita, 56 (coaxingly): "My dear boy! You’re home? I was so worried about you all day! Did you manage to eat anything while you were out?" Sumit, 23 (tossing his bag onto the sofa): "Yes, Ma, I ate something outside."
