In this episode of Better Human Better Dog, I focus on a different kind of dog psychology lesson. Instead of rehabilitating a dog after the problems begin, I show how to prevent bad behavior by choosing the right dog from the start.
One of the biggest causes of aggression and dog behavior problems is people choosing a dog that does not match their lifestyle, energy, or family needs. A dog should not be chosen by cuteness, breed, or fantasy. A dog should be chosen by energy.
First I meet Ramona and her 12-year-old son Roman, who are ready to welcome a new dog after losing their beloved Rocket. Roman has autism and can be sensitive to sudden sounds and movement, so Ramona needs a dog with the right temperament, not just the right look. I introduce them to Boba, a one-year-old French Bulldog who grew up around children and knows how to give space and stay gentle. Then I bring in Alby, an eight-week-old Husky mix puppy who is full of joy but startles Roman when he barks and jumps. I choose Boba, because Boba brings silence, calmness, and an open mind. Then I teach Roman and Ramona how to walk him, so the relationship begins with leadership, responsibility, and trust.
Then I meet Debbie, a third-grade teacher whose dog Millie barks and lunges at other dogs on walks. It became serious after Debbie's father was injured and suffered a concussion during a chaotic encounter with another dog. But Millie is not a bad dog. Debbie's fear and tension travel straight down the leash, so Millie believes her human needs protecting. At the ranch I teach Debbie to read a dog's energy instead of its appearance. For her final challenge she takes Millie on a pack walk with two of the biggest dogs she once would have feared, and Millie never barks or lunges.
The right dog is not chosen by cuteness, breed, or fantasy. The right dog is chosen by energy. And the right walk is built on knowledge, calm confidence, and leadership.
