Cycling to the source of the River Thames is a ride I’ve wanted to do for years—and discovering an old railway cycle path finally gave me a route from Swindon to Thames Head. Join me on this Cotswolds cycling adventure through Cricklade and the Cotswold Water Park, following stretches of National Cycle Network Route 45 (NCN 45). The ride follows part of the disused Midland and South Western Junction Railway before heading through South Cerney, Ewen and Kemble towards the Thames’ source. Along the way there are reminders of the old railway, peaceful countryside and glimpses of a river that looks very different from the Thames we know in London. But what actually awaits at the birthplace of England’s most famous river? If you enjoy UK cycling routes, railway cycle paths and discovering local history by bike, come along for the ride. 🚲 Out for a Cycle is about enjoying the journey and discovering the history hidden along the way, with cycling adventures around Swindon, Wiltshire, the Cotswolds and beyond. Also, a few challenges on the way makes it even more worth while... Have you visited the source of the River Thames, or cycled this stretch of NCN 45? Let me know in the comments!
