The street is named after Hristo Belchev, a distinguished Bulgarian poet, economist, and Minister of Finance. Tragically, Belchev was assassinated nearby in 1891 in a case of mistaken identity, an event that shocked the young European nation. Following the liberation of Bulgaria, the street quickly evolved into an elite residential and intellectual hub. It became a canvas for prominent Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian architects who designed stunning Secession and Neo-Baroque townhouses for the city's emerging aristocracy and intelligentsia.
