Across the Silence (Version One) Lyrics
Why do I always have to be the one
To break the silence between us?
Like a lonely hand reaching through the dark,
Hoping yours will reach back somehow.
But the silence hangs between us
Like a door you never bother to open.
Why am I always the one who messages first?
Always the one who has to say your name?
I keep throwing my heart across the distance,
But you never seem to throw yours back my way.
If I stopped reaching, would you reach for me?
If I went silent, would you even know?
Or would I simply fade into the background
Like someone you were never afraid to let go?
I send my words like paper boats,
Floating across an endless sea,
Hoping they'll somehow find your shore,
Hoping you'll come looking for me.
But most of them disappear beneath the waves,
And I'm left staring at an empty screen.
When I finally do message you,
I wait like a lighthouse watching the sea,
Keeping my light burning through the night,
Wondering if you'll ever look my way.
Sometimes you answer, sometimes you don't,
And every silence feels louder than words.
Why am I always the one who messages first?
Why does it always have to be me?
I keep opening doors you never walk through,
Still hoping someday you'll come looking for me.
If I stopped reaching, would you reach for me?
If I stopped calling, would you wonder why?
Or would the silence finally prove
I was the only one keeping us alive?
How many times can I knock on a door
Before I have to wonder if I'm unwanted?
How many times can I whisper, "I'm here,"
Before my voice becomes an echo?
I'm tired of carrying both sides of the distance,
While you never seem to notice I'm gone.
Maybe that's what hurts the most—
Not that you don't always reply,
But that you rarely seem to wonder
Why I suddenly stopped reaching out.
Because if I disappeared from your world,
Would you even come looking for me?
I don't want to chase you just to feel remembered,
I don't want to beg for a moment of your time.
I just wanted you to want to talk to me,
Without me having to cross that line.
I wanted to feel like I mattered enough
For you to reach for me sometimes.
Why am I always the one who messages first?
Why am I always the one who cares?
I keep sending pieces of my heart to you,
But they disappear somewhere out there.
If I stopped reaching, would you reach for me?
If I stopped trying, would you finally see?
Maybe the hardest answer I'll ever face
Is that you might never come looking for me.
