İngilizcede ‘Rağmen’ Sadece Although Değildir!

Örneğin: Although the car was cheap, I didn’t buy it. Araba ucuz olmasına rağmen satın almadım. Bu cümle tamamen doğru. Ancak aynı fikri İngilizcede tek bir kalıba bağlı kalmadan farklı şekillerde de ifade edebiliriz: Though the car was cheap, I didn’t buy it. Even though the car was cheap, I didn’t buy it. Despite the car being cheap, I didn’t buy it. In spite of the car being cheap, I didn’t buy it. The car was cheap, but I still didn’t buy it. Cheap though the car was, I didn’t buy it. Cheap as the car was, I didn’t buy it. No matter how cheap the car was, I didn’t buy it. It didn’t matter how cheap the car was; I didn’t buy it. The car was cheap, but all the same, I didn’t buy it. Buradaki önemli nokta şu: Hepsi birebir aynı register’da değil. Bazıları günlük konuşmada çok doğal, bazıları daha resmî, bazıları ise C1–C2 seviyesinde daha gelişmiş yapılardır. Örneğin but I still… ve even though… günlük konuşmada oldukça doğalken, cheap though the car was… veya cheap as the car was… daha ileri seviye ve daha yazılı/sofistike bir kullanıma sahiptir. Yani İngilizcede “rağmen” deyince akla sadece although gelmemeli. Aynı düşünceyi bağlama, vurguya ve konuşma seviyesine göre birçok farklı yapıyla ifade edebilirsiniz.
