Autumn at La Bourdette, Daumazan-sur-Arize, South France

The last summer guests have left. Their tyre tracks are still in the gravel – and now La Bourdette is getting ready for autumn and winter. An old country estate near Daumazan-sur-Arize in the Ariège, three quarters of an hour south of Toulouse: an avenue of plane trees, a maison de maître with light blue shutters, a pool between cypresses and terracotta jars, and around 50 acres of parkland, mown paths and woods. In autumn there is dew on the meadows and mild sun under the vines at midday. In winter the fire is lit, someone is cooking in the big kitchen, and the long table fills up while the mist drifts over the fields.
