Have we come here to beg for glory, to string together words and collect our applause-- with fraudulent spoken, fraudulent glory earned, fraudulent labour through the night! Who will awaken today, who will endeavour? who will dispel our motherland's shame-- who will cry from inconsolable pain and laying a life of desires at her feet? Is this only frivolous play, a revelry, only a charade of deception? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a song written and composed by Rabindranath Tagore in Bangla for the occasion of National Congress, which was held in Calcutta from 28th to 30th December 1886. The gathering was designed to be a British-styled dinner party for the dignified leaders, to congratulate one another. Rabindranath Tagore was invited to sing for the entertainment of the delegates. In a letter to Pulin Bihari Sen the poet Rabindranath Tagore had made a note of the following: "... Raising voice at one time was a process of gaining favours from the [British-ruled] government. One evening a conference was scheduled. An invitation was sent for me through a messenger who was known to me. Despite my vehement opposition he continued pressuring me and expressed how unsuccessful it would be there without me. The almighty did not provide me the strength enough to defend an opposition however legitimate may it be. I composed the following song just before going there... 'Aamay Gaahite Bolo Na...' . It was far from a pleasant situation after the song was sung. People present in the conference were not happy at all. ..." It invokes emotions of indignation and frustration, tuned in "Kafi" raag of hindustani classical music, and the captivating pace. "Aamay Bolo Na Gahite Bolo Na" is about speaking up against inauthenticity and self-benefitting greed. The lyrics paint vivid images of bitterness and exasperation towards the compliance with the oppressor for the interest of the self, ignoring the suffering of the less fortunate. They set the mood to deliver the burning message to awaken and act authentically to free the suffering people of the country.
