Original Poem of Pastor Joby Soriano (April 2021)
I first “met” Pastor Joby on TV during the second year of Covid. His message that day was simple but direct — Money. Something about the way he spoke made me pause. I kept a copy of the poem he shared, highlighted the lines that struck me, and over the next few days I found myself returning to it again and again, adding notes, rhymes, and reflections.
About a week ago, I stumbled upon the poem again — and all my old highlights and scribbles came alive. This time, I reached out to Pastor Joby for permission to use his words of wisdom in a Poem‑to‑Song interpretation.
Thank you, Pastor.
Below is the original poem by Pastor Joby Soriano, followed by my Poem2Song interpretation, created with deep respect for the message he shared.
⭐ ORIGINAL POEM
Money - What does it Matter? by Joby Soriano
What is money? Printed ink on a piece of paper
People lie, cheat, steal, labor for what will end up one day as vapor.
It drives many to what they call seeking for success
When in the process they lose the essence of life because they are so filled with stress.
This currency blinds us to reality, causes deafness insensitivity,
Hearts filled with greed, a loss of integrity, minds without serenity.
We think it’s our right to use it as we please
Forgetting it is God’s, we should give thanks on our knees.
I obsessed with money, thinking happiness and joy would follow
Only to be overcome with emptiness my life was truly hollow.
It cannot buy time, peace, health, friendship or love
It betrays us and consumes us, leaving us nothing to be proud of.
Wake up to the richness we truly possess in Christ
It is the freedom from sin that He paid with His sacrifice.
Being blessed with wealth is not a curse or a sin
For as long as it’s not our master or idol or love within.
The incredible investment that outshines all the things that money can buy
Is sending it on ahead by depositing it in the lives passing by.
You and I today are not defined by what we have to show and display to others
Our true identity is engraved in the heart of our God who sees us like no other.
Grab hold of what God has given you today and use it so no one forgets
As you end your life, you will look back with a smile and have no regrets.
⭐ ABOUT THIS SONG
This Poem‑to‑Song version is my attempt to carry Pastor Joby’s message into melody — a reminder that money can blind, consume, and mislead us, but it can also be used for good when held with humility and gratitude. His words speak of identity, integrity, stewardship, and the truth that our worth is not measured by what we display, but by the God who sees us.
I hope this song encourages anyone who feels overwhelmed by the pressures of success, finances, expectations, or comparison. May it remind us that true richness is found in Christ, and that the greatest investment we can make is in the lives we touch along the way.
Printed ink on a paper sheet
A fortune the banker calls complete
We lie and cheat, gamble and steal
For a shadow that was never real
I pushed myself towards success
Then filled my heart with strain and stress
We lose the life we’re meant to live
Forget that joy is ours to give
Money blinded my heart and sight
It numbs my soul to what is right
But God restores what wealth cannot hold
A richer life than any earthly gold
I chased the glitters for my soul
Then found a void and paid the toll
No peace, no joy, no one to hold
Just empty dreams that leave me cold
True wealth is found in Christ alone
Not pieces of paper we claim to own
God gave us life no money can buy
A love so pure and never runs dry
Yes, money blinded my heart, my sight
Weakens my soul from what is right
Then Christ restores what wealth cannot hold
A richer life than silver and gold
Printed ink on a paper sheet
A fortune gone, the banker calls defeat
We cry and beg and pray and kneel
For the truth our broken spirits heal
So use what God has placed in you
Let every gift reflect to what is true
Sow into souls along your way
For love outlives what fades away
Yes, money blinded my heart and my sight
Weakens my soul from what is right
Then Christ restores what wealth cannot hold
His love outweighs money and gold
