The Johnny Cash Show cast then and now 2026, and the hardest question first, who tragically passed away. When ABC handed Johnny Cash an hour of American prime time on 7 June 1969, he was thirty-seven years old, three years out of a divorce and two years out of a Georgia jail cell, and he opened every episode from the stage of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville with the same five words he had used since Memphis, hello, I am Johnny Cash.
Fifty-eight episodes were taped before the show ended on 31 March 1971, and the company he built around himself was his own touring family. June Carter Cash was on it every week, alongside the Carter Family, Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers and the Tennessee Three. Bob Dylan came and sang a duet with him, Linda Ronstadt made her television debut, and an unknown songwriter named Kris Kristofferson was put in front of the country for the first time. One man never made it to that stage at all. Luther Perkins, whose muted guitar had defined the Cash sound since 1955, died of his burns in August 1968, months before the first episode aired.
Fifty-seven years later the losses run deeper than most people realise. Johnny Cash died on 12 September 2003 at seventy-one, less than four months after June, who was gone on 15 May that same year at seventy-three. Marshall Grant, Bob Wootton and W. S. Holland, the men who played behind him, have all followed. Kris Kristofferson died in 2024. Here is the whole story, from a cotton colony in Dyess, Arkansas to a statue in the United States Capitol, and what became of the children he left behind.
