Fire-making history changed human evolution. We examine how early groups moved from scavenging embers to creating sparks.
The history of fire is often framed as a singular invention, yet the archaeological record suggests a more complex reality. We contrast the natural occurrence of wildfires with intentional fire management, exploring the distinction between carrying embers and the cognitive ability required to create sparks on demand.
By analyzing Neanderthal technology and the broader timeline of ancient human survival, we assess whether our predecessors possessed the capacity to generate fire independently. This analysis frames the development of pyrotechnology within the context of human evolution, showing how the control of fire fundamentally altered our trajectory as a species.
