As the code behind advanced analyses grows more complex and nuanced, more journals are recommending, or requiring, that authors make their “custom analysis code” publicly available. But at what point do you take your “scratch paper” and publish it to the internet for all to see? How can you build pipelines into your process to make that transition smoother, and which bad coding habits should you break to avoid the “Stack Overflow outrage”? This week focuses on the practices that turn private scripts into shareable code: sensible project organization, a clear README, favoring documented functions over one-off scripts, and choosing an appropriate license. We will anchor the discussion in Wilson et al.’s “Good Enough Practices in Scientific Computing” as a practical baseline you can hold your own repositories to.
