Did Black leadership get compromised by the very institutions it trusted to deliver progress? In 1903, W.E.B. Du Bois argued that an educated Black elite, the Talented Tenth, would lead the rest of Black America forward. More than a century later, that class exists. Black Americans hold degrees, titles, political office, and seats at the table. So why hasn’t the rest of the community moved with them? In this video I break down the Talented Tenth idea, how Black leadership became tied to elite institutions, and whether that approach came at the expense of economic independence, cultural autonomy, and real community power. The hard question: what happens when the people meant to lift a community start answering to the institutions that elevated them? Should Black America rethink who leads it, and how?
