Where Does New York City's Trash Actually Go?

A garbage truck clears the curb—but where does New York City's trash go next? Follow an illustrative household trash journey through transfer stations, sealed containers, barges, rail transport and disposal facilities. In this episode of Behind the City, discover why collection is only the beginning, how marine transfer stations work, what happened after Fresh Kills closed, and how landfill disposal differs from waste-to-energy. We also separate the stories of refuse, recycling and organics.
