Climbed Pinhoti 3 from the Mulberry Gap Rd trailhead all the way up to the Cohutta Overlook on Hwy 52, then turned around and bombed it back down. This is the payoff.
P3 (aka Turkey Mountain) is one of the classic trails in the Bear Creek and Pinhoti system outside Ellijay. The climb up is a grind, but the ride down is a long, fast descent full of tight switchbacks and bench-cut singletrack. Solo ride today up in the North Georgia mountains.
TRAIL INFO
Trail: Pinhoti 3 / Turkey Mountain
Where: Chattahoochee National Forest, near Ellijay, GA
Distance: about 3.7 miles each way (roughly 7.4 out and back)
Climbing: about 1,100 to 1,200 ft from the trailhead to the overlook
Elevation: roughly 1,700 ft at the bottom to about 2,400 ft at the top
Difficulty: rated blue, but plenty of riders call it blue-black because of the climb and the switchbacks
Trailhead: small pull-off on Mulberry Gap Rd with room for a couple cars. The top end is the Cohutta Overlook on Hwy 52.
COOL STUFF ABOUT THE PINHOTI
Pinhoti comes from the Creek language and means "turkey home," which is why the trail logo is a turkey track.
The Pinhoti Trail runs about 335 miles from Flagg Mountain in Alabama up into North Georgia, where it ties into the Benton MacKaye Trail, which leads to the Appalachian Trail at Springer Mountain.
The Bear Creek and Pinhoti area has some of the oldest mountain bike trails in the Southeast.
The trail is shared with hikers, so ride smart on those blind switchbacks.
Have you ridden P3? Do you climb it or shuttle it? Let me know in the comments.
