Japan is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world — and one of the most prepared. But how ready are the people who live here when disaster actually strikes? With Disaster Prevention Week underway, Japan Today Spotlight host Jeff Richards is joined by former NHK World presenter Aki Shibuya to look at how Japan prepares for earthquakes, floods and other natural disasters — and what people should be doing before the next one. They discuss Japan’s disaster drills, what not to do during an earthquake or flood and the concepts of "kojo" (government assistance), "kyojo" (helping each other) and "jijo" (helping yourself). Then they open a ready-made emergency bag from Amazon to see what’s actually inside — and what still needs to be added. They also look at preparing for pets, medications and other individual needs, and why simply having an emergency bag by the door doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready for a disaster.
