Something has gone out. Not the lights around you. Not the people. Not the circumstances of your life, which may be, by any objective measure, completely intact. What has gone out is interior. A sense of direction. A relationship with meaning. The feeling that what you were doing mattered — and now it is simply not there.
This is not depression. You have not lost anything you can name. The darkness is not dramatic. It does not announce itself with sufficient force to justify how seriously it sits on your chest. It is simply an absence.
In the sixteenth century, Juan de la Cruz called it the dark night of the soul. Carl Jung called it the dissolution of the persona. Viktor Frankl called it the confrontation with meaninglessness. They were all describing the same thing — and they all arrived at the same counterintuitive conclusion: this darkness is not something happening to you. It is something happening in you. And the difference between those two things is the difference between a crisis to be survived and a passage to be entered.
This video is about what the dark night actually is, why it happens, what it is doing while it is happening, and what becomes possible on the other side — not despite the darkness, but because of it.
