Kim Yo-jong, sister of Kim Jong-un and a senior official of the ruling Workers' Party made a statement through the North's state-run Korea Central News Agency on Wednesday morning saying there will be a retaliation to South Korea's fabrication. The blast took place on September 21 on the western front, during a South Korean military operation. Two soldiers were seriously wounded. On Monday, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said a North Korean mine was highly likely the cause. The UN Command acknowledged that the crater lies south of the Military Demarcation Line. Kim insisted North Korean soldiers have never crossed the border, and called the South's claims of border crossings a deliberate attempt to shift blame. A spokesperson for South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff gave the location at a briefing on Tuesday. September 29, 2026 "The explosion took place about ten meters south of the MDL. It is also about ten meters from an area where North Korean troops are presumed to have laid mines." Kim Yo-jong also said "This incident is a clear hoax that closely resembles the 'wooden box mine incident' that shook the world more than ten years ago, in both timing and method." However, the 2015 case Kim cites cuts the other way. A joint investigation found that in 2015, North Korean troops crossed the line and planted mines, maiming two South Korean soldiers. Pyongyang denied it and called the finding absurd. The North later expressed regret over the soldiers' injuries. But it never accepted responsibility. This time, Kim's statement makes no mention of the wounded soldiers. She warned that if South Korean troops fire live rounds instead of warning shots, North Korean border units will retaliate immediately and without mercy. She said tactical counter measures will be reinforced facing the South Korean Army's 21st Infantry Division. The statement was not carried by North Korean domestic outlets. The Joint Chiefs have said Seoul will take corresponding measures if the final investigation confirms the mines were laid by North Korean forces.
