Wainfleet All Saints Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Lincolnshire, and around five miles southwest of Skegness, is the town of Wainfleet All Saints. The town's name is derived from Old English 'Wegn fleot', meaning 'wagon stream', as in stream that can be crossed by a wagon. The 'All Saints' component refers to the dedication of the parish church, helping to distinguish the town from the neighbouring village of Wainfleet St Mary. Geographically, Wainfleet All Saints is situated on or near the Roman fort known as Vainona, and along the River Steeping, which historically supported its role as a port. During the medieval era, this was the site of a natural harbour and a thriving salt workings. In 1305 it was granted a market charter. The silting of the river from around the 16th century, along with concurrent growth in nearby Boston, brought about an end to these industries. During the late 14th century William of Waynflete was born here. Waynflete would go on to found Magdalen College, Oxford in 1458, during his tenure as Bishop of Winchester. He also founded Magdalen College School in Wainfleet itself in 1484. The school has since been repurposed as a library and museum. At the southern end of the town centre is the Parish Church of All Saints. This was built between 1820 and 1821 on the site of an earlier medieval church of the same dedication. In 1871 the railway arrived in Wainfleet All Saints courtesy of the Wainfleet and Firsby Railway. The station of today is situated on the Poacher Line which runs between Grantham and Skegness.
