I was recently getting my old 14x8 snare drum in working order because I wanted to try and emulate the old Pearl Vinnie Paul snare. I can't remember the exact specs on my snare but I believe it's fairly similar to the Vinnie Paul snare. If you've watched my channel at all since maybe 2017 my go to snare head has been a Remo Powerstroke 77. I thought about going to my default and just putting a P77 on it since I believe it's the best snare head on the market. I decided not to because I wanted to experiment and try something new.
I started looking into different drum head brands but in the past I've thought Evans heads felt a bit too much like plastic and Aquarian heads always seem to cause a problem where they lift the hoops of my drums up and throw off everything about my playing. I don't know if anyone else has had issues like that but I'd be interested to hear if you have. I've heard plenty of recordings where people get great sounds out of other brands but for feel alone I think I'm going to stick with Remo.
I'll be honest I had no clue Remo made a P4 with a center dot and I typically like snare heads with a dot for the added durability. I tried to find demos of this specific head being played but I couldn't really find much information about it. Reading the specs it's almost identical to a P77 with a thinner but larger inlay ring. That's actually great for this snare because it rings a lot so I like some of that added control. I just put this head on recently but so far I'm really liking it because it feels exactly like the P77 that I'm so used to playing on but with a little less ring. Included in this video is some raw audio where the only "mixing" I've done is making sure mics are in phase and a full on mix. I think the snare sounds great. The only thing I may do in the future is tighten the snares a bit because I think they sound a bit loose in the full on mix when playing double strokes. Let me know what you think!
