My Sister's College Sealed Every Dorm at Midnight—Dad Went In Before the Sirens

I pulled up to the Delford State visitor lot at half past twelve and found my father’s Ford parked crooked across two spaces, driver’s door wide open, phone on the seat, dome light burning. The card readers at Marsh Hall locked red at 11:59 PM. The county sirens didn't start their climb until 12:06 AM. Inside, four hundred freshmen were sealed across eight floors. Outside, hundreds of terrified parents were pacing the asphalt, convincing themselves my father had some kind of inside warning. He didn’t have a warning. He was late. My sister Robin had texted him from the third-floor lounge at 11:15 after a student returned sick from Delaware Street. By the time he walked through the front doors at 11:52 with a visitor pass, Robin had already fled upstairs to the sixth floor. When the alarm tripped and the halls went dark, Dad didn’t run up. He read the floor map, grabbed two rubber wedges and a roll of duct tape, and wedged the heavy fire doors shut on Floor 3—locking down the outbreak without ever knowing which side of the concrete his daughter was on. Out in the parking lot, as panic swelled and a father held a brick against the glass, I had to manage the crowd, track the exposure timeline, and make an impossible choice about what Robin’s torn sleeve and scraped hand really meant.
