Here Sven Brodmerkel, PhD (SoSci) and I welcome our latest live guest Alan Moore (https://beautiful.business/).
Alan started as a typographer and book designer, then spent years in advertising agencies across Europe. He is the author of No Straight Lines, Do Design and Do Build, and the founder of The Beautiful Design Project (https://thebeautifuldesignproject.com/), which works with business leaders and makers on building regenerative businesses.
We begin in a student bedroom in 1982, with every wall covered in images and a teenager realising that creativity was the engine room of who he was, whatever his mum thought of it as a career. From there we get into why he calls beauty the ultimate metric and why he says beauty is a verb, what doubt does for a maker, and why a fearful person cannot be a creatively confident one.
Then there's the story of Alan as a child, on a beach in Cornwall, watching his mum, usually stressed about putting food on the table, joyful and playful. Reaching an impasse in his life he sat with the question of what would take him home for years, and that memory is where the idea of 'why beauty is key to everything' came from.
Thank you, Alan and Sven, for a great conversation!
