2025-11 Texas State Park - Caprock Canyon State Park - Haynes Overlook & North Prong Trail

Another amazing Texas State Park. Not too far from Palo Duro. We stayed in Tulia Tx right in the middle of both parks which worked out well for us. We saw a ton of Buffalo as well as numerous prairie dogs so wildlife will not dissapoint. We did the Haynes Ridge and Upper Prong Trail Loop. We went counterclockwise and very glad we did. About a mile to two miles in be on the lookout for small canyons with stacked rocks and be sure to travel down them, a very unique experience. Views everywhere! Did not see any wildlife on the trail but there was plenty on the roads driving in. Got there around 11 am and only 6 cars in the lot. Did not see anyone until we got to fern cave and even then we only saw 3 groups. Cold morning starting in the 40's and getting to mid 50's, great hiking weather. Rated 'hard' and the trail did have its spots but overall we would rate a high moderate due to the rock scrambles. Overall just short of 7 miles (more with the added canyons) and just under 900 elevation (but most was condensed in just two areas).
