Krauchthal-Fluehüsli Lindental Switzerland Special Path: https://s.geo.admin.ch/r69n6yodbanv The Fluehüsli in Krauchthal is one of the most fascinating and last remaining inhabited rock or cave dwellings in Switzerland. Nestled in the steep sandstone cliffs of the Lindental valley, not far from Krauchthal in the direction of Lindenthal, this historic building is truly one of a kind in the canton of Bern. History & Life in the Rock • Historical Origins: As early as the last Ice Age, an arm of the Aargletscher glacier carved the characteristic semi-caves out of the sandstone. In 1565, a citizen of the city of Bern received the first permit to build a dwelling in the cavities. Even the famous poet Jeremias Gotthelf once mentioned these dwellings as a place of refuge. • Construction: In its current form, the house was built in 1993 using solid construction methods directly beneath the protective rock overhang. Previously, the complex served as an unconventional farm. • Secluded idyll: The houses are accessible via 347 steps directly from the valley or via a private inclined elevator for transporting goods. Living in the rock offers very special acoustics—when you close the door, there is an almost complete silence. Hiking Highlight in the Emmental The Fluehüsli isn’t directly accessible by car, but it’s a wonderful sight to behold as part of a varied hike along the Swiss hiking trail network. Since the trail passes right in front of the house, it’s a popular spot for photos. • Classic Route: Krauchthal – Fluehüsli – Bantiger – Geristein – Bolligen. • Difficulty: The hike includes sections along narrow, forested ridges and requires sure-footedness. The trails should be hiked primarily in dry weather.
