Nigeria is back on the global investment map. From September 21, FTSE Russell is bringing Nigeria back into its frontier market index after three years outside it. That could mean billions of dollars moving into Nigerian equities as passive funds tracking the index buy qualifying stocks. But there’s another side to the story. Of the 10 Nigerian companies entering at the top tier, six have a single Nigerian shareholder holding either a controlling stake or a substantial block. And that means when global money follows the index, some of Nigeria’s biggest shareholders could feel the impact first. Aliko Dangote holds 87.45% of Dangote Cement. Femi Otedola owns about 27.6% of First Holdco. Rasheed Sarumi has an estimated 53.1% interest in Presco, while Victor Odili holds 5.8% of MTN Nigeria. Then there are founders like Jim Ovia and Ladi Jettsimi, who stepped away from the boardroom but retained significant stakes in the companies they built. Their stories reveal something important about wealth creation: sometimes the biggest advantage isn't selling at the right time. It's continuing to own the right asset when the market is required to buy it. But the story goes beyond individual shareholders. Nigeria was removed from the FTSE index in 2023 largely because of concerns around foreign-exchange accessibility. Since then, reforms have addressed some of those barriers, and FTSE Russell has now confirmed Nigeria's return to frontier status. The bigger question is what happens next. New index-driven money can enter the market, but money coming in isn't the same as value being created. And attracting foreign capital is only one part of the equation. The bigger test is whether Nigeria can build a market where that money wants to stay. For the six shareholders highlighted in this story, however, one lesson stands out: Sometimes, the power isn't in selling. It's in owning. And that is why Nigeria's return to the FTSE Russell frontier index is about much more than an index change. It's about ownership, market access, and what happens when global investment rules suddenly put the assets you already own in the spotlight. ▶ Subscribe to our YouTube channel:    / @billionairesafrica   #Nigeria #FTSERussell #AfricanBillionaires #NigerianStockMarket #Dangote #FemiOtedola #BillionairesAfrica #Investing #AfricaBusiness DISCLAIMER: This video is for informational and educational purposes only and should not be taken as financial, legal, investment, or business advice.
