Carlsbad Caverns is famous for its enormous underground chambers—but what created them is far stranger than the usual story of rain slowly dissolving rock.
Deep beneath New Mexico, hydrogen sulfide associated with underground oil and gas deposits moved upward through the ancient limestone. When it met oxygen-rich groundwater, the reaction produced sulfuric acid. That acid dissolved the limestone along fractures near the water table, helping carve the vast passages and rooms of Carlsbad Cavern over millions of years.
The cave preserves clues to this unusual process. Massive gypsum deposits left behind by the chemical reaction can still be seen on the cavern floor. The limestone itself began as part of an ancient reef roughly 265 million years ago, long before the Guadalupe Mountains took their modern form.
But sulfuric acid is only part of the story. After the cave passages drained, water seeping down from the surface helped create many of the stalactites, stalagmites, and other formations visitors see today.
In this Planet Beneath documentary, explore the geology, chemistry, and hidden underground processes behind one of America's most remarkable cave systems.
