On September 27, 2026, Lake Mead fell to 1,037.79 feet, the lowest level since it first filled behind Hoover Dam. It is about 188 feet below its 1983 high-water mark, and the pale "bathtub ring" on its cliffs records every foot of the drop. As the water has fallen, what it covered has been coming back: the town of St. Thomas, a World War II landing craft, the first water intake Las Vegas ever built, a steel barrel with a murdered man inside, and, in August 2026, a human jaw at a swimming beach. Before the reservoir filled in the 1930s, archaeologists raced to excavate the Lost City, towns were bought out, and the last resident of St. Thomas burned his house and rowed away. Almost everything under the lake was written down. The exception is what people put there themselves.
