An amber VT220 hardwired to a VAX 8650 running VMS V5.0, one Tuesday evening in November 1988. No application gets written here — this is the toolchain doing its work. A spectrograph reduction package for the 1.0 m telescope has to be rebuilt from source: SHOW SYSTEM and SHOW MEMORY first, then the MMS description file, then VAX C V2.4 grinding through eight modules one at a time. A clean compile prints nothing at all and takes half a minute, which turns out to be its own kind of texture. SPEC_IO refuses to compile because somebody swapped RMS$_EOF for SS$_ENDOFFILE on Friday afternoon, and VMS file versions fix it without an editor. Then LINK, thirteen undefined symbols because VAXCRTL was left off the command line, the full map with its psect synopsis and symbol cross reference, an object library built module by module, a full MMS rebuild from sources, the same build submitted to SYS$BATCH, and finally BACKUP to 1600 bpi tape and LOGOUT/FULL. DCL in upper case, file versions on everything, blocks instead of bytes, %FACILITY-S-IDENT messages, and a nine-day uptime. An hour of dark, unhurried instrumental — music only, no typing sounds. 1 hour, 1920×1080, with sound. Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!): https://uppbeat.io/music/tracks/simon...
